Keep An Eye On The Currency Exchange Market And Save Money When You Travel

Monitoring the currency exchange rate is very important if you’re planning to go on a vacation and would like to stay within your set budget and save money. Let us understand what exactly currency exchange rate means. In general, depending on the US dollar, most of the other currencies are calculated in value and are either more or less than the value of the US dollar. For example, a Canadian dollar would be worth around 85 percent of the US dollar. Similarly, the British Pound is worth two US dollars. However, owing to the fluctuating market conditions, one day the British Pound could be worth two dollars while on the next, it could be worth more than two dollars.

There are two types of currencies – free floating and pegged. A currency that is determined by the government of the country in relation to the another currency is called a pegged currency. Inthe 1980’s, the Hong Kong dollar was fixed with respect to the US dollar. On the other hand, a free-floating currency is permitted to change in value with respect to all other currencies in the foreign exchange market. When referring to currency, people often discuss issues like the real exchange rate and the nominal exchange rate. The actual exchange rate is the rate for which products of a country can be traded for the products and services of another country. The nominal exchange rate on the other hand, is the value at which the currency of a certain country can be traded with that of another.

Practically speaking, currency exchange rates generally change from one country to another and make travel and tourism easier and more attractive. So, if you’re planning on going on a vacation and there are several countries that you plan to visit, it is advisable to keep an eye on the current exchange rates. This could help you save money. For example, New York City is always full of tourists from France, Japan, the UK and Germany at different times of the year. This is only because at certain times the exchange rates favor the Europeans or the Japanese, making it cheaper for them to visit America than at other times. In recent years, the currency exchange rate is seen to have worked in favor of all the European nations.

Before the Euro came into existence, Austrian currency was the Schilling, Germany the Deutsche Mark, Italian Lira, Switzerland had the Swiss Franc and France the Franc. In the early 80’s the currency exchange rate was two and a half Schillings for a dollar while five French Francs made one US dollar. On the other hand, the Deutsche Mark fluctuated anywhere from 1.7 Marks to 2.5 Marks to the dollar. So, when the US dollar was at 2.5 Marks, the Americans would trade in their dollars for German Marks to stay ahead.

Watching out for the fall or rise in exchange rates is always beneficial for tourists who would like to travel and at the same time save money. Even if you are only thinking of hopping across the border to visit family or are planning on flying to Mexico or Canada, knowing and understanding the nominal exchange value of another country is very important. So, remember to plan your vacation at a time when the fluctuation in exchange rates is most likely to help you.

How To Save Money On Gas Effectively

There is a lot of controversy and debate nowadays on what the most cost effective alternative fuels are. For those looking for alternatives, it is advisable to put your time and energy into the gas saving efforts that are proven and available.

People are talking about a lot of different options but there is not yet a consensus on what the most cost effective device is. However, it is still necessary in today’s economy to save as much money on fuel expenses as possible. With the ever rising gas prices, every trip to the pump is stressful but there are ways to reduce this expense.

Hypermilling is an incredibly effective solution and it does not cost much to incorporate nor does it mean changing too much in the way of your lifestyle. You will, however, need to change a few habits in order to maximize your gas saving potential. Getting your vehicle in pristine shape is the key.

You will be able to save money in gas without having to purchase another vehicle or buy various gadgets. There are also other advantages when you maintain your vehicle in top working condition. Your car will last longer, allowing you to avoid the expense of a new one for longer. You will also be less prone to accident.

First, ensure you are changing the oil as recommended, every 3,000 miles or three months. Changing your oil regularly will keep your engine running smoothly and will make your car more efficient. If you take it to a place that specializes in oil changes they will even remind you when it is time to change it again.

Check your tires using a tire gauge and ensure there is continually enough pressure in them. Having them at the exact recommended air pressure will allow your car to get better gas mileage and reduce the amount of times you will have to refuel. Check this regularly.

Just like you should get regular checkups from a doctor, so too should your car get regular check ups from a mechanic. A tune up is advised at least every year, sometimes more if you do a lot of driving and put wear and tear on the car. Don’t wait until something breaks.

When you get your oil changed, they will likely also inspect your fuel injectors, air filter and oxygen sensor. Though having these things in less than perfect shape will not stop it from running, it will increase the amount of fuel it takes to drive your car. Check them regularly and replace them as needed.

If you can, drive as much as you can on the highways to maintain a consistent speed and reduce the amount of stop and go traffic you run into. Driving at the speed limit consistently will help reduce the amount of fuel you go through and will also give the added bonus of keeping you safer.

How to Save Money on Food – Tips to Keep Your Produce Fresh

How do you save money on food? There’s nothing more frustrating than opening up your fridge and seeing all that expensive produce rotting in the fridge drawer. If you’re tired of throwing away moldy and rotten produce there are a few simple things you can do to prolong its freshness.

Our fridge temperature is probably one of the last things that’s ever on our mind. The temperature inside your fridge should be between 32F and 41F. If it’s too warm, food won’t be chilled correctly and bacteria will start to multiply. While if its too cold, ice particles will form within the food.

Avoid storing fresh produce in the plastic packaging in which it’s sold. Air should circulate around fruit and vegetables to prevent them from sweating and becoming soggy.

Potatoes: Stop potatoes from sprouting by storing them in a cool, dry place with a few apples. If you’ve peeled too many or have peeled them in preparation for cooking, put them in a bowl. Then cover them with water, and place the bowl in the fridge.

Lettuce: This is one exception to the no-plastic rule because it seems to thrive if it’s kept loose in a large plastic bag in the fridge. A good way to revive limp lettuce is to slice off a sliver of the stem and place the lettuce in a bowl of cold water. Individual leaves can be revived if you sprinkle them with cold water, wrap them in a tea towel and pop them in the fridge for an hour or so.

Carrots, beetroots and turnips: Cut off any green, leafy tops because these will continue to draw nutrients from the roots. Like all root vegetables, carrots will last longer if they’re kept in a cold, dry, dark place with good ventilation.

Lemons: After you’ve cut a lemon in half, place the halves cut side down on a saucer. Then cover them with an inverted glass and store them in a cool place.

Celery: Celery starts to lose its flavor as soon as it’s washed. The best way to store a piece of celery is to stand the stalk upright in a glass of water before placing it in the fridge.

Mushrooms: Store mushrooms in a cool, dark place, but not the fridge. I find that they last longer if they are wiped dry and laid on a piece of paper towel.

Onions: Onions are easy to store. Just put them into a vegetable basket or wire rack. The trick to preventing them from rotting is to keep the bulbs apart so that air can circulate around them.

Tomatoes: Some people like their tomatoes rock hard, while others prefer them soft. Green tomatoes, along with any that haven’t fully ripened, are best stored in a dark place. Exposing them to sunlight simply makes them soft not ripe. To ripen them, place them either in a brown paper bag with an apple or in a drawer, stalk side up, and leave them until they’ve turned rosy red.

Apples: Remove unblemished apples to prevent them from contaminating the others with their rot.

Saving money on food is more important than ever before, especially with produce prices at all time highs. Why not give these tips a try? Over the course of a year you’ll be surprised at how much you’ll actually save on your grocery bill.

Save Money – Know the Games Stores Play

Want to save money on the things you buy? Then you need to be aware of the games that retailers play. Here are two of the most common.

Reference Price Advertising

“Was $119. Now only $89!” You have seen ads like this, as well as similar signs in the stores. Regardless of whether the retailer ever expected to sell a single unit at the $119 price, you feel like you are getting a deal, and that is the point.

Some states have laws requiring that these are at least honest advertisements. This means the store must have the item for sale at the stated price for a certain amount of time before they can claim that it was the “normal” or “regular” price. Many comply by having it at that price for the absolute minimum time required. Often, they don’t actually expect to sell any at the “regular” price. It is solely there to make you feel good about the new price.

Another way some retailers use this tactic is by having many similar models of a product. For example, a furniture store might have several mattresses that are very similar. They then rotate which one is on sale, so there is always one that looks cheaper by comparison. If this appears to be the case, certainly don’t pay the regular price.

Of course you can save money in this situation by buying one of the “sale” items. But what if you like one of the ones that is at the “regular” price. Since they never expect to sell these at that price anyhow, the store manager may give you a similar discount if you ask (or insist). Otherwise, you can wait until it is that model’s “turn” to be on sale.

Price Matching Scams

Many stores have found that it costs them nothing to guarantee the lowest price. They claim that they will match any competitor’s price, and that may be true. But then again, they will only match the price on the exact same item – and they may not carry the same models as other stores. Also, they are very aware that we rarely check the prices of many other stores before buying – and almost never after buying.

Research shows that when a store advertises that it will match competitors advertised prices, we generally have the impression that they have lower prices than other stores. This impression is there even when they are one of the higher-priced stores around. Again, this is because we often just don’t check the prices at other places.

The few customers that actually compare prices and demand a reduction don’t cost the store much. Meanwhile, the store gets to sell for more than other stores to all the “average” consumers. By the way, a study done by the Consumer Literacy Consortium in 2002 found that buyers who spent 16 minutes comparing prices online save an average of $100 on a TV. Do a little comparison shopping if you want to save money.

Save Money When Buying a New Vehicle: What You Need to Know

A new vehicle is likely to be the one of the most expensive purchases you’ll ever make, so it can really pay to learn a few tricks before heading to the dealership. Here’s what you need to know.

Do Your Homework

Savvy car shoppers go to the dealership prepared. You can save big with just a few hours of online research.

Before you set foot in the dealership, know exactly what you are looking for and have a general idea of how much you are willing to spend. You will also want to know the vehicle’s Base Price as well as the options (and their costs) that are most important to you. You will also want to know the following:

MSRP

Make sure you know the vehicle’s Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), also known as the “sticker price” or “list price.” The MSRP is basically the market value of the car. It generally does not include registration, taxes, freight or destination charges, or other fees that the dealer may add to your negotiated price.

The Invoice Price

The invoice price or “factory invoice price” is (in theory) what the dealer paid the vehicle manufacturer. Most cars are sold below MSRP and some even below invoice price.

Why would a dealer sell below the factory invoice price? The stated invoice price often isn’t the amount the dealer actually paid. A dealer may get a variety of different discounts and incentives that can make their actual price lower than the “factory invoice price.”

While the factory invoice price may not be what a particular dealer paid for the car, the invoice price is the same for all the dealerships, so it’s important to know the invoice price so can determine who is giving you the best deal.

Estimated Market Price.

A quick Internet search may also provide you with a car’s Estimated Market Price (EMP). The EMP is available for a limited number of makes and models and is the estimated price that people are actually paying for the car, based on actual sales made at dealerships.

You need to also pay attention to extra add-ons that may contribute to a higher price tag. Make sure you want or need the extras that you will be paying for. And if the dealership doesn’t have a vehicle with the combination of extra features you need, shop around or wait for the vehicle that’s right for you.

Shop Around

Don’t go to just one dealership and settle. Make sure you have plenty of time to see the prices and available inventory at other dealerships. When you know what other dealerships can currently offer you, you have a great bargaining tool.

Armed with this knowledge, you are ready to negotiate prices. And keep this in mind: Automotive.com reports that a full 25 percent to 45 percent of customers have successfully purchased cars below the factory invoice price (sometimes by thousands of dollars.)

Your down payment is also going to be a big help in your negotiations. If you can use cash as a down payment, it can give you another bargaining chip. If you have a vehicle to trade, you will definitely need to get an idea of its worth before you haggle the trade. And don’t settle on this point, either. If the dealer isn’t offering you enough for your trade, consider selling that old car yourself and pocketing the cash.

Use everything possible to get the upper hand over the dealer. Remember, as the buyer, you are in control and run the deal. Do not let the salesperson badger you. Know your numbers and stick to your demands.

It’s important to not tell the salesperson what you are willing to spend until you get locked into negotiations. Then let them know that you have a certain amount you will spend and if they can’t negotiate a deal, you will need to do business elsewhere.

The bottom line: If a dealer wants your business, he’ll work very hard to get it. That means you have power. As long as you keep that power, you should be able to save money when buying your new car.
